Portfolio stuffs

This is the glory of my infamous shoe-spider. The one I worked on all night long, making go a whole 38 hours and 40-ish minutes without sleep, which was horrible. However, it is done! And it is amazing. I wish I had had time to get better pictures. I love this sculpture!

The whole set-up.

This is the last of the Phi series, the one I redid, since it was positively disgusting before, so I completely changed it and am now almost happy with it, but I had to get it done for the BFA review which was on Friday--that's the super stressful event in which we turn in our portfolios and find out if we're good enough to continue and get into the Graphic Design program. I made it!!! By the way! I'm in Graphic Design! Stress is gone. :)

Phi

Our last assignment in Typograpy was to choose a Greek letter and write at least 100 words about it, then use that copy, the symbol and display text to create three designs, each emphasizing one of the three elements. This one was by far my strongest piece of the three I created, and I like it alot, even though I had to print it out 4 times to get it to be the right size, so I wasted a good 75 cents or so on it...This one was meant to emphasize the symbol.

I don't really like this one any more, but it's better than my third piece, which I will not post until I redo it. This one was to emphasize the display text (title).

Hell

In typography, we made images for a quote and put 'em together. This is not what I did for the assignment, but the quote was one of my peer's, and I thought I'd try my hand at it. The actual quote is just the first line of text.

Another Look At MSE: Implementation

I love this design so much, I just have to show its implementation! This is just the page without content--generally our sites go to a page like this when a user tries to access the site without logging in, hence the buttons and side panel, all encouraging you to sign up. I made the buttons and graphics, Dad chose the colors for the side bar and the navigation buttons, but I really like his choices, so I'm advising him to keep it that way. So sehr schoen!

How Does It Make You Feel?

After I went up the canyon again last Sunday, I stopped to look over the valley at a parking lot just off campus on 400 North. As I sat, enjoying the visual feast, I started picking up rocks and thought it'd be fun to put 'em together into a sculpture, since this whole year has been very 3-D oriented. I went back and hot glued this little thing. I think it's actually pretty cool, and I did do a great job editing the photo, since you can no longer see the hot glue.

Typogram

This assignment in Typography was so cool! A Typogram is much like a logo (though it can be a logo) in that it communicates the meaning of the word, using only the anatomy of the given letterform. I absolutely love this, and am so proud of myself for coming up with something this strong! :D

Pretty proud of this here image, I gotta say. It's for a product we're launching as a part of another product: Royalty-Free Audio Intros, some of which I created, perfect for presentations, websites, movies, etc. ;)

Off With My Headers

I've been making some pretty good headers lately, especially when compared to my old stuff, but it seems like no one is actully liking them :(. This one is for ezicing--I'm trying to Revamp it to get the quality of the site and its visual happiness to be equal. However, my mom promptly said she didn't like it.

Try #2, throw in the dots. She likes the dots, but still says something's wrong...

Try #3, didn't like the "squares," so she likes it without them, but still doesn't like it...Someday I shall conquer this project.

I did this one a while ago, thoroughly proud of the great new logo, the typography, the color scheme. I sent it to my dad and...rejected! He said there's no color! I didn't want there to be much color, I thought the nice cold business scheme was gonna work out...It's still my favorite, but I also like my last header.

Magazine Spreads

My final project in Computers and Art. I had to design two spreads, a content page, and a cover for a magazine--thus, I made up Simply Cake Decorating, my mom's personal cake exhibition magazine. Right now, it's free of charge, but there are limited supplies, so get one quick. Also, be sure to check out the new charity that's opened up, I call it, "The Jess Brown Foundation For Starving Artist College Kids Who've Played Lacrosse And Drums And Halo And Who Speak German And Who Go To USU And Are Freaking Awesome Even Though They Have No Money So Donate To Us." Like it? I do.

Valley of Predators Revisited

I re-did my book cover so I could chop the minus off my grade, and I certainly do like my title better. Note that this is an image to be printed, which is why the picture is lightened kinda strangely, but based on how dark the copy center's been printing, this probably would be quite beautiful :D. I also added little jeep details in the lights on the back cover.

This was a cool quote, so I thought I'd take a shot at some Typography--getting me excited for next semester, I think it's the class I've been most awaiting since I started Graphic Design, actually. Typography is too cool and I can't wait to figure out what I'm doing.

Finals Week!

After my final in Computer Science, I decided to clean up the mess I'd made the last couple days, then remembered my commissioned project to create a star for #9's tree, so I cleaned a little and then sat down for a couple hours and came up with this wire-star. I then spray-painted it black, a nice finish, and it now looks super cool! Merry Christmas! :D (Dec. 7)

My final in 3D Design. It's a Peregrine Falcon found-object sculpture. This was fun. (Technically finished Dec. 7)

I think this is actually my favorite angle, because the "feathers" are just so cool--and so is the tail.

Time-Bound

My last 3D Design project was a metamorphosis project using clay. I choose two objects (an hourglass and a ball-and-chain) and made a sequence that morphed one into the other. It was pretty cool, I love the actual ball-and-chain one (above), I think it was my best.

Tiles 4 and 5. It's funny, 'cause there actually was some thought that I put into the meaning of this piece (I usually just come up with some BS the day a project is due and pretend I had more intentions and purpose for doing things other than just doing it because it was an assignment). I kept thinking about how time is binding and how it, itself, is also bound; we live according to time and we also don't have enough time. That's why I chose and hourglass and the chains. Thought that was pretty cool.

Book Cover: Valley of Predators

My computers and art project. It's 10" x 18" and freakin' awesome. The arm is my roommate's, and I really like how my picture turned out after playing with it in Photoshop for so long. If you'll notice the bottom right-hand corner, it's brought to you by Phobia Publishing--recognize the logo? It's from my first comp and art project! Genius!

Scarab

The scarab beetle has one of the coolest shapes, in my opinion, in the bug world. I particularly love the abstracted shapes the Egyptians used in their depictions of the "sacred" bug. To show how consistent I am with my love of the shape, I'll let you know that my favorite view of this playing-card-beast is the bird's eye view, which is the most common view of the scarab beetle in both ancient and modern artforms and abstractions. It took forever to make. I love the legs--especially the back ones, I thought it was genius how I made the two back legs as one element, but still portrays the idea that there's two legs. I hate the head, but that's what I get for procrastinating, I suppose--though my teacher said that was what she liked, so if it pleases her, it pleases me.

We're Certified!

Icons to be placed on sites to reassure the customer the site is tested, trusted, and certified. These are pretty cool, I think. I love the second one, 'cause I can use the technique for other things, just happened upon the effect by accident. Love it!
